In 2014 the Department of Transportation issued a rule that required backup cameras in all vehicles that weigh less than 10,000 pounds by May 2018.You like or not, you must have a backup camera in your car.If you plan to keep your older car but still want the peace of mind that comes with a backup camera, it's not too difficult to install one yourself.
Back up cameras are now readily available as aftermarket parts that anybody can install on older vehicles. My first system was wired and the biggest issue I had was installation. If you also want to install a wired backup camera, you need to go through these steps--which often costs you one or two hours
- Mounting Rearview Camera:
- Mark the Spot:
- Drill the Hole
- Routing Your Wires:
- Align & Connect:
- Secure Your Wiring:
- Set Up the Monitor:
- Connect Your system
Frankly speaking, getting a wired backup camera has some specific disadvantages. You'll have to run the wiring through the entire vehicle, from the back where the camera is to the front of the car where the monitor will be mounted by the dashboard.Worse still,if you aren't as good with technology, you may need to hire someone to complete the installation. So,think twice before getting yourself this one, especially if you’re unable to break your bank!
My second, and current system is truly wireless with no extra cables are needed during setup.I purchases it based on YouTube videos and recommendations from others.Installation was mostly straight forward:Take off rear license plate,Slide license plate into the bracket,Reattach your license plate and finally set up the monitor,It takes just 3 minutes to install this system--It is probably the easiest backup camera to install in the world. How well does it work? Surprisingly well. We were impressed by how quickly the monitor and the camera start up when the car is turned on and shifted into reverse. The image is very clear and the camera performs well in both high- and low-light situations.
Choosing between wired vs wireless cameras totally depends on your needs, but if you aren't able to spend a lot of cash, feel free to go with the wireless rear view camera.

Can’t figure out how to charge camera and monitor.
The new camera will not turn on when the truck is in reverse. Must unplug and replug to show what is behind.
